How many of you can relate?
So you have made the decision to make healthier choices. You go grocery shopping and fill your cart with fresh fruits & veggies, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat/skim milk. For dinner you prepare a new healthy recipe that you just found online that incorporates all the wonderful ingredients you bought at the grocery store earlier in the day. The first thing you hear from _____’s (insert family members’ name) mouth is a groan and negative comment about the healthy meal.
You are not alone! Even as a dietitian, I also face this problem from time to time.
My husband who was well aware that I was on my way to becoming a dietitian when we exchanged vows a little over three years ago, gives me grief too. He has been so supportive of me and my career throughout college and even when I had to move over 900 miles away from him so that I could complete my dietetic internship! However, he STILL gives me a hard time about some of the healthier choices I make for both of us. Here is a little conversation we had about the whole wheat flour I brought home one night. I am not endorsing any particular brand, however it is relevant to the story that you know this particular brand was called King Arthur flour.
Husband: “I knew you would do this…”
Me: “Look..the recipe called for it… it’s King Arthur Flour”
Husband: ” Yeah because it’s from medieval times”
Me: “Look do you even know the health benefits of whole wheat flour?”
Husband: “Yeah, the black plague”
Me: (trying to be serious) Do you know the difference between white flour and whole wheat flour?
Husband: “One is nasty tasting and the other is white and fluffy tasting”
Yes, my husband can be hilarious, which is why I wanted to share the conversation above, but I also wanted to let you know that I can relate to what you are going through.
At the end of the night all you can do is keep a positive attitude and know even if your family complains , the choices you are making will help improve you and your family’s overall health!
